Draw with Brian #12 - Magician Sneaking Away 2: Cleanup and Colors 1
Hey everyone, welcome back to Draw with Brian. I'm Brian. Let's get into today's drawing.
Cleaning Up the Inks
All right, so we've been working on Magician Sneaking Away 2. I think we're pretty well done with the inking. The only thing I want to do is clean this up, and then we can get into some coloring.
Let's find our background here. I guess we still just have Background Rough. All right, let's pick our eraser tool. Yep, that is exactly what we wanted. Let's get rid of that. Let's zoom in just a little bit and drag that over. Let's get it out of his beard, too.
Okay, I think that is good. Let's save this real quick. I've only got about 20 minutes until I've got to go get ready for work, so this will be quick today.
Making a Coloring Page
Before we get into the coloring, let's export this image file, because this will make a fine coloring page, I think. We'll save this as Magician Sneaking Away Coloring Page. All right, there we go.
Starting the Colors
Okay, let's get into the coloring. Just like with the inks, we work our way from back to front. Coloring, we're going to work our way from front to back.
Let's add ourselves a layer here and give it a name. We're going to say Derrick Color. Let's zoom out and get over here on Derrick.
I think I talked about it another time. We have this eyedropper tool down here, the color sampler, where we can grab from another image. I could click on here, but what I've noticed is, if I do it from this one, then the next time from this one, and the next time from this one, that color starts to drift. I like to set a color, and that way it stays the same.
Let's get Derrick's hair. The other thing I like to use is this paint bucket tool—the Fill tool, as they call it in ArtRage. Then it's one click and you've filled it in. It's a nice, even color, and you're not seeing the brushstrokes.
The only thing you have to watch out for is that sometimes, if there's a little gap and the color bleeds out, you can't do that. But it makes quick work of the coloring.
Now Derrick's skin. Let's get his neck, and let's not forget his nose. He does not have a pure white nose.
Adding Derrick's Details
One thing we're going to do here is get back onto the ink and pick black. This is one where I like to come back afterward, because otherwise you wind up with some white gaps in there. It's kind of a nod to Charlie Brown—they always had this little bit of shadow going here.
Oh, you know what we did? Let's undo that. Let's switch over to our pen tool. We were still on Fill. Derrick Pen—that's the one we want. Let's give him a little bit of shadow under his neck.
It doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, it usually was not on the Peanuts stuff.
Now, let's see what we've got. We've kind of got this lighter color and this darker color. Let's see if I was smart enough to save those. I was not. So what did I use for those colors? It wasn't matching with this guy, was it? Maybe we do need to set aside some color on that.
I don't think I saved his armor. King's armor—good night. I don't think I had him the same as the good knights, did we? Let's see if I've got one of my references open here with everybody. No, he's definitely not the same color as these guys.
Let's use our dropper, even though I'm not a fan of doing this, and add a sample. We'll call this Derrick Armor Primary. You can see I do a wonderful job of mixing my cases.
Let's grab the other color and add a sample. We'll call that Derrick Armor Secondary. Now we've definitely got our colors set, at least for the rest of this.
Let's fill this, and also up in here. Interesting—his rivets are actually the same color. It's a lot of tapping. The Fill tool will ignore some of these small gaps so you're not constantly bleeding out, but sometimes you've got a lot of tapping to do. At this point, it'd probably be quicker to hit it with the paintbrush.
All right, two more to go. Bam. Very color-coordinated: we've got his elbow pads and gloves the same color.
This around his neck was just black. Some kind of no-name color there, so let's make this black.
It's been an awful long time on that. That's usually a bad sign. Oh no, it did all right.
Can we alphabetize these? Sort Samples—yes, sort by name. Now we're alphabetized, and all our Derrick stuff's together. Derrick Armor Secondary. Now we'll fill this.
I can see some roughness in our ink here. Let's zoom out. I think that is it for Derrick. How are we doing for time? I've got 10 minutes. Shoot, let's work on somebody else. How about the Black Knight?
Working on the Black Knight
We're going to add a layer above the rough layer and give it a name: Black Knight Color. Let's drag over here.
As I recall, I believe his hair was just black. Let's take a quick look. This actually looks darker. What color was his hair? Let's grab another sample. There's black. Definitely not the same—although that's actually pretty close.
What I'm doing is looking down here at this and also this to see if they move. That's very, very close. I think this one's actually darker. In fact, that one looks like black. Black Knight Primary—that close. I'm wondering if I had them just being the same. Those do pretty well look the same. Let's say that it matches his hair. I'm going to go with that.
Okay, Black Knight Primary is his armor and his hair.
Finding More Line Cleanup
Look what we've done here, though. We missed something. I've got no neck going on this guy. We need to fix that. Let's come up to Black Knight 2, switch back to straight-up black, and give this man some neck.
Actually, he had quite a bit of neck showing, didn't he? Let's go with that. The back of his head would flow better into his neck this way. Let's erase this and see what we think. Yeah, I like that better.
While we're at it, let's do a little more cleanup here and there. Drop that way down. Ooh, too much. Let's drop it down even more and clean up this little errant line.
See, we thought we were just coloring. There's always a little bit of cleanup you'll find here and there to do. I may have gone too much right there. Would anybody notice this? Probably not, but I noticed it. Nobody's going to zoom in this far, but since we are zoomed in this far, let's do it right. It's not like we're doing this on paper with India ink and I have to bust out the white-out.
Gosh, such sloppy linework. This is terrible. So we're doing some coloring and some cleanup here. This was my ink. I think what we've got here is the need to do some cleanup. Let's flow that a little better.
Excuse me. We're going to have to wrap this up. A very short video today—from my perspective, pretty short. Let's do a little last bit of cleanup here.
Really, Brian, how did you let all this past you? Apparently we weren't at the coloring stage; we were at the inking-cleanup stage. In fact, I noticed some stuff on Derrick, too. We may be going back in the next video and doing more inking cleanup. This is pretty sloppy inking here.
That's certainly better. I accidentally hit that button on the pen. It's nice having the button on the pen sometimes, but sometimes not.
I think he's looking pretty good. Most of this wasn't too terribly visible, but before I leave, I've just got to clean this up. Wrong tool—Erase. A few little errant lines here. This might not bug anybody but me. Look at this one—it's going to mess up my color. This is why you do your line cleanup before you do your color.
Wrapping Up
I think I can live with the rest of this. This is going to be the coloring we've gotten done today: just Derrick, and a little bit of line cleanup on our knight and Derrick. He's actually looking pretty decent.
Let me save a little bit there for next time. Let's clean up that eyebrow a little bit. The magician's not looking too bad. This is actually intentional. This is going to be background color, but there's some overlap there with his beard. That's intentional also. It looks like it's errant, but no.
Okay, guys, I think we are going to call that for today. Thank you for drawing with me, if you're drawing with me.
